Marigold flower contains compounds of Luteolin, which are carotenoids. (Breithaupt et al., 2002) A clinical study, where participants were given a daily dose of 5 mg of lutein-containing products for a period of 12 weeks, found that oral administration of lutein may offer superior protection. This was observed through changes in lipid peroxidation and photoprotective activity in the skin following UV light exposure. (Palombo, P. et al., 2007)

According to the toxicological evaluation of lutein food safety, the ADI value of JECFA is 2 mg/(kg·d) (Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives, & World Health Organization, 2005).
